âThe club does look different at night,â I say when we arrive at Club Harmony.
The open floor plan is filled with circular tables with about ten golden chairs tucked into each one, all draped in white cloth and topped with a vase filled with white roses in the center. The silverware and dishes are set up, waiting for guests to take their seats when dinner is served.
The room is already packed with guests, some of which I recognize from productions Iâve worked on in the past. I feel my chest tighten. What if I run into someone from Studio 42?
Ugh.
âI need to say hi to those people over there,â Carter says, as I scan the room for more familiar faces. So far, only a few people I faintly recognize. They probably wouldnât even remember who I am if I approached them.
Carter places his hand on the small of my back and guides me toward a man and a woman standing near the far-end tables. Theyâre each holding a glass of champagne, immersed in conversation with one another.
âYou two made it,â Carter says, flashing them a wide smile. I didnât think his mouth was capable of taking up that much space on his face.
âCarter, darling,â the woman says. She faces Carter and they exchange a kiss on each cheek. When she pulls away, she beams at him with pride.
I raise a brow as I assess the situation. The woman is slender and as tall as Carter, wearing a plum, spaghetti-strapped gown that falls to her silver heels. Her brown hair is in a ponytail, with two ringlets framing either side of her face. Sheâs beautiful but looks a lot older than us. Possibly in her fifties. The man looks about the same age as her.
âAunt Evelyn,â he says as he steps back. âAnd Uncle Martin.â
Uncle Martin gives Carter a single nod. âGood to see you, Carter. Youâre looking more handsome than ever.â He raises his champagne glass to toast toâ¦Carterâs good looks?
I chuckle to myself.
âMia, this is Evelyn and Martin Adler, my aunt and uncle.â
I extend my hand out. âItâs nice to meet you both.â
âWow, Mia, youâre beautiful,â Evelyn says, never taking her brown eyes off my face.
âThank you,â I say. âSo are you.â
âHow are your parents doing?â Evelyn asks, fast to change the subject. She places one of her hands on Carterâs shoulder. âIt seems they never come to New York anymore.â
Carter shrugs. âI havenât spoken to them in a while, so your guess is just as good as mine.â
Judging by his tense shoulders, it seems Carter and his parents arenât close. His relationship with them must be a sensitive subject for him. I wonder why. He seems comfortable around Evelyn and Martin though.
âThe next time you hear from them, send our regards,â Martin says, thinking nothing of Carterâs brief update on his parents. Whatever is going on between them, Martin and Evelyn must be aware of it.
âWhen did the two of you get here?â Carter asks. âHowâs the scene?â
Evelyn sighs.
